Abstract

The migration process has profound implications on the economy of Romania and the Republic of Moldova, regardless of the determining factors and its causes. Unlike Romania, which in the post-communism period faced a migratory process only towards the west (to the EU), in the Republic of Moldova the migration was initially moving towards the east (to Russia and other CIS countries) and only in past decade its direction was switched to the EU member states. This happened because more and more Moldovan citizens also have Romanian citizenship, which allows them to travel, to study and to work legally in the EU. Much of the migration process arises from people's desire to have better paid jobs compared to local ones and in the scope of family reunification. However, migration has economic effects on both the economy of countries of origin and destination, and therefore, the migration process must be managed carefully because it can significantly influence economic growth, living standards and local and regional disparities, both positively and negatively in the same time.
