The Leading Role of the Universities in the Danube Region

Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this paper is to discuss the regional influence of the universities along the Danube river and their impact on the economic and social development of the Danube space. Prior Work: Exploration of the dominant values of the societies in the Danube countries. Approach: Theoretical clarification of the phases in the changing role of the universities nowadays and presentation of some good practices of their regional impact within the Danube region. Results: The general conclusion drawn in the paper is that the universities in the Danube region can serve as a driving force of the societal development. They stimulate the innovations and the growth of the social capital. Implications: The paper can initiate a discussion among the Danube universities about their mission, role and social responsibility. Value: The study will contribute to better understanding of the universities’ roles in the contemporary societies and their mission to guarantee the economic and social development.
